These things are really amazing and I’m still in awe of not only the practicality but also the implications the functions of these devices demonstrate. These are literally magic wands. What are antennas if not magic wands? They are the modern interpretation of a wizard’s staff. What sits atop a wizard’s staff? A crystal, right.

Well, this device uses common electronics components – germanium crystal diodes, an antennae and some capacitors to generate electricity from the environment, from thin air! This clever little circuit [pats self on back] is capable of converting naturally occurring RF energy to DC electricity. And RF is all around us anywhere on the globe, even where no man made signals can reach.

I stand on the shoulders of a giant though. At least that is what I was told by a super jelly runner-up as I took home the Grand Prize at the Golden Mousetrap Awards a few years ago.
