Serendipitous is probably a better word for it. But, on my flight, my ears popped and my hearing was affected, like usual. Now, I’m a student pilot and I know all the tricks to restabalize the pressure in the inner ear. Hold your nose and blow, yawn, ga-ga noises. Though, no matter what I did, my hearing was impaired all weekend and on the flight back and even into the next day, throughout my trip and still persisted as I returned.

I couldn’t hear shit. Business meetings, training with a new marketing assistant, talks with clients were all droned out by the hum from my inner ear. It felt like a disaster!

Then, I realized.

While stretching and performing my morning meditation I could hear the breath entering and exiting my lungs, I could hear my heart beat like never before. As I moved my body I could hear every abrasion on my bones and joints in my neck and shoulders. It was similar to sanding a piece of wood. It may look smooth but as you take a piece of sandpaper to it, back and forth, you can feel all the imperfections. Then, as you sand, you know when you’re done as you feel and hear the protrusions have been removed.

It was the same. Because of my popped ears I was able to feel these protrusions and pretensions in my body. I was able to recognize them, focus on them and address them with the reciprocal motions of breath work and yoga.
Therein lies the truth gained from my morning meditation. It’s all good. Any injury, to your body or to your mind or to your spirit, is for the best. It may not feel like it. Injuries and struggles may make us feel deaf, blind or dumb but it also may help us perceive more clearly what is within us.
